Suck it up!

June 26, 2013

I am an eternal optimist. Now I recognize that not everyone can be that way. There are plenty of people out there who subconsciously see the dark side of things, and that does not mean they are any worse of a person. However, I do believe that being a pessimist does not mean that your attitude must constantly be pissy. Your internal view does not have to force your external attitude.

At work recently I have been dealing with a lot of annoyance due to coworkers who insist on casting gloom around them wherever they go. Now I recognize that shit happens and that not every day can be full of sunshine and unicorns. But when that shit happens you have a very important choice to make. You can either dwell on it constantly and complain about it to everyone around you all the time until they visualize smacking you in the face over and over–or you can suck it up and get on with your life. You may even realize, after you choose to not worry about it, that there are still some positive things in life and that, shock of all shocks, mean you can actually still enjoy your day even when everything doesn’t go perfectly.

Now of course I realize that no one can do this perfectly and we all have crappy attitudes at some time. But I have absolutely zero patience for people who insist on having a horrible attitude all the time, no matter what happens. I wish people could realize that sometimes the only person making you be miserable is yourself. And if you are bent on finding fault and hurt wherever you go, of course that’s all you’ll see. But if you turn up the corners of your mouth and unshrug your shoulders for two seconds you just might find that life isn’t always the melodrama you’ve had playing around in your head. That everyone is not out to get you, and that there is still fun to be had.

Ok, Rant over. Thanks for listening.

I’m a self-confessed pessimist, but I try not to be the herald of doom and gloom all the time. I know your sunny personality and eternal optimism will eventually rub off on those people…maybe they just need hugs!
